Is it possible to cash an American bank's check in Nepal? So for example, can you take your check book to Nepal and write checks? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

.
You can change only travellers cheques.
There are some places in thamel they change them but very bad rate.
Just take American Express or Thomas cook or other travellers cheques.
or the best is Mastercard or Visacard. You can get cash at any ATM machines.
They are everywhere in kathmandu now.

It is possible, but it will take weeks for the check to clear. It will take even longer if the amount is in excess of $10,000 as it will be scrutinized even further.

Using travellers cheque is much easier.

Or better yet, just do the bank transfer. It will cost a little more, but no hassle involved and you will always get the best rate the bank has to offer.

Or, another alternative would be to use your credit/debit card. They they high interest, but they work fine.

I understand you get double whammy when you use credit card in Nepal. First you get charged 5% in Nepal, then second you get charged another percentage or some surcharge for foreign transaction in the US. Is this true?

That's alright. But how does it work? Are there any particular banks that accept foreign checks? Thanks, Riten.
